The best cities in the world are said to have a river. Tartu is lucky to call one its symbol even – river Emajõgi is partly the reason why Tartu as a city came to exist, it has been widely used as a waterway and trade route for centuries.
These days Emajõgi is still the second largest river in Estonia. Although the trade gets mainly done elsewhere and differently, the only fully navigable Estonian river well deserves to have its own festival. That is why during a Friday and a Saturday in August boats, people, fishermen, musicians, an occasional medieval barge, many merry thoughts and songs and river-life experts gather in summertime city centre and in Karlova Harbour to celebrate the symbol – Emajõgi – of Tartu.
